Overview

Internet Information Services (IIS) provide you with a set of servers (IIS servers). You can use these services to create and run your own website and associated applications without interference. Systems are incorporated with a package of web based services that can be used to create programs and web pages online. Developed by the Microsoft Corporation, IIS has become one of the most popular systems worldwide. Once beginning as part of a University research project, IIS is now among the Internet services offered by Microsoft along with Windows NT. This program is considerably difficult to learn since it requires prior knowledge of training in computer languages and software programs. This software comes with a set of tools with Microsoft FrontPage, Visual Web Developer 2008, Silverlight tools for Visual Studio, Microsoft Dot Net, and SQL Server 2008.

Benefits

IIS comes with a set of modules for content, security, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), compression, caching, diagnostics, and logging. Each module can be used to customize a web page for an enhanced visitor and programmer experience. IIS allows you to make changes to your website whenever you want to do so. You can avoid the expense and hassle of hiring a web developer to design or change a webpage. By using IIS, it is possible to create a bolder and more innovative website. These websites are immune to hackers and viruses and are consequently more secure. Microsoft FrontPage is a user friendly tool with simple control panels, so designers have freedom when constructing a website. Users can even access an extensive technical support system.

How It Works

IIS consists of a package of servers and associated applications. It acts as a transmission line from the data feed to the software to a storage location on the actual server. The server connects to the Internet through Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) ports. The information sent to this stack is then presented in an accessible way to the end user. Information is then shuttled to different stations in order to deliver the desired output. The information from the stack is sent to different services: WWW publishing services, NNTP services, and FTP services.

Companies/Brands

Microsoft is the major company associated with IIS. A few competitors including Apache, Sun Microsystems, and O'Reilly also deal with IIS.
