Overview

Application servers, also known as middleware, perform a variety of functions online. These programs connect information from a database to a web application. It is a server program in a distributed network that provides business logic for an application program. An application server functions on a multitier software architecture platform that serves an Application Protocol Interface (API). Application servers refer to the service, hardware, and software used to host a website.

Application servers are preferred for their size and complexity of programs. The size of the server increases the ability of caching data, which improves the performance of the website and the flow of data. An application is server designed for running specific applications for site navigation, business portals, E-commerce, CRM, and supply chain management.

The application server that you choose should meet your website's specific needs. You must also see to it that your application server is compatible with your operating system and web server.

Benefits

Application servers fulfil the need for data and code integrity and allow data to be centralized on a set of computers. Programs allow you to access and coordinate data from a central and secure place. Application Servers use client-server models, which improves the performance of the website even when there is heavy traffic on a network.

Another benefit is that application servers allow data to be stored as a unit and distributed amongst all the network of computers and database servers. This way, the data is stored in a standard form in less time. Application servers also help you deliver applications that are capable of various tasks. They help you ask other database applications for data and to generate data using Flash. Application servers can be integrated with other systems. You can also create shopping carts and e-commerce websites using these servers. They also can be configured to give an immediate e-mail when someone sends you information or searches for information on your website.

How It Works

Application server can be used as a processor, especially for business services. Using security enhanced model, you can authenticate user requests. An application server is generally described a three tier application. The three levels are Graphical User Interface (GUI), application server, and a database server. The GUI acts as the front end of the application, while business logic applications work in the middle tier on a local area network. At the back end is the database or transaction server. Sometimes application servers work with the web using Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and are known as web application servers.

Companies/Brands

Some of the leading application server providers in the market include Oracle, AppServ, and Zope.
