Wireless Network

Wireless Network

Overview

A wireless network allows computers and systems to communicate without wires. Infrared rays or radio waves are used to transmit data between systems. This transfer takes place at connection points between networks that are known as nodes.

Examples of wireless networks include wireless personal area networks (Wireless PAN), wireless local area networks (Wireless LAN), and wireless metropolitan area networks (Wireless MAN).

A wireless PAN is used to connect devices in a small area, like an office or a school. Bluetooth and Zigbee are used to create wireless PANs. A wireless LAN can be used to network systems over a relatively larger area when compared with a PAN. A wireless MAN, also known as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access or WiMax, is used to connect several wirelesses LANs.

The cost of setting up a wireless network includes a setup fee, equipment fee, and a monthly access fee. Other expenses include the cost of Wi-Fi cards, routers, and Bluetooth receivers.

Benefits

An advantage of a wireless network is that it is very simple and easy to set it up. You have more convenient options to access the Internet, especially when travelling. The biggest advantage of wireless networking is that you can access Internet from any place at any time. You just need a mobile phone, laptop, or device enabled with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Wireless networks reduce clutter by eliminating the need for wires. You can even configure a wireless network that is as secure as a wired connection. Many people are concerned that wireless networks aren't secure and easily accessible hackers. Technological improvements allow wireless networks to be as safe as wired networks.

How It Works

A wireless network system works in a variety of ways. A wireless router is installed in the network and sends out signals to other computers. The router acts as a centerpiece to which computers, printers, and other peripherals can be connected. These routers allow you to share files between systems, connect to Internet, and share printers and game consoles.

A computer's Wi-Fi card and wireless hardware receive the signals from the router. A password-protected Service Set Identifier (SSID) allows you to connect to the Internet.

Wireless network operates in two ways through infrastructure and ad hoc modes. With the infrastructure mode, computers are connected with wireless adapters to an existing wired network using wireless routers or access points. Wireless clients are directly connected to each other without a router or access point with the ad hoc operating mode. You can connect up to nine computers using an ad hoc wireless network.

Companies/Brands

Wireless network providers include Comcast and AT&T. NETGEAR, Belkin, and Apple manufacture wireless routers.

its been long time want wireless so that i can bring somewhere my laptop but until now since i got router netgear and got adapter is useless coz doesnt work i follow the demonstration step by step but it cant be work...
i dnt know whats wrong...can u help me to figure out fix my problem? thanks you !!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased a Netgear Router which was faulty. I replaced it with another Netgear Router. However, you have to make sure to shutdown all your computers, and disconnect all your modem and router connections. Then reconnect all of them in the order that is illustrated in the Netgear instructions that come with the software before you power-on (turn on) your computer or laptop. Sometmes you may have to reset the modem or router, or both, and have your ISP (internet service provider) send a refresh signal for your internet service. Following this, use the installation CD and follow the instructions. It worked for me.
