Remote Access
Overview
Remote access allows people to connect to networks, servers, and files from different locations. If you have a company, you may want to set up remote access options for your employees. This way, employees could access their files while at an offsite meeting or while at home. You can also set up remote access for clients. You can share information with clients without the added costs of airline tickets and hotel fees.
You might be able to access networks from anywhere or from a business-approved computer, depending on the sensitivity of the data. Remote access also allows you to access a certain computer and the desktop from another location. While you are working at one computer to change the desktop of another computer, you might notice a lag as you perform certain duties. Lags can be alleviated by faster Internet connections, but to some extent, you should expect delays.
Benefits
With the use of remote access, large files are easier to handle. When you are using a remote access system, files can be stored on a larger computer as long as it is connected to your access points. In this way, your computer can run as quickly as possible during every usage, but it will be free of the larger files that can slow things down. However, you will always have access to it, which can be faster than bringing it onto your current computer station. This is also helpful when working with a client on a project. By keeping the larger file offsite, the speed of interaction with that file can be faster and more accessible by each side of the collaboration.
File synchronization is another benefit of remote access. By being able to keep two or more computers all on the same page, you will ensure that the information you need is always up to date and ready to be used for whatever purpose you need it. Safety is another important feature of remote access systems. By storing your information offsite or on two separate computers, you will always be able to access it even if one of the computers is stolen or destroyed. You can also create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) so that users can access a network securely.
How It Works
To work with a remote access system, you need to setup a remote server to store a copy of your data. This way, if anything happens to your data, you can simply access it from offsite. You will then set up a link that can take information from your computer and place it onto the server, and then setup a program that allows you to sign into that program in order to access the server.
In order to control a desktop remotely, you need to have some sort of access point already installed in the computer.
Companies/Brands
There are many companies that setup remote access systems for businesses and personal use. Cisco provides remote access servers for you to purchase or lease. You might also look for products from Dell and Apple to help you create systems.
