Application Protocols
Overview
Application protocols are sets of rules and formats that determine the communication behavior and the function of a web application. Open System Interconnection (OSI) is a process of connecting an open system which is a system is ready to communicate with another system. The OSI model has seven layers that define the different stages through which data travels from one device to another over a network. With this model, each layer performs a well defined function.
An application protocol provides all the protocols and methods that are required to carry out network communications. This protocol is also used in wireless communication in a form known as a wireless application protocol (WAP). It is specially designed for mobile networks for cell phones and laptops.
WAP contains variety of protocols likes Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Post Office Protocol (POP3), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Without this application layer, there would be no proper communication between one application and another inside a network. One of the important functions of application layer is file transfer. There are two types of application protocols: Common Application Specific Elements (CASE) and Specific Application Specific Elements (SASE). CASE is further divided in four ways: Association Control (ACSE), Recovery Control (CCR), Reliable Transfer (RTSE), and Remote Operation (ROSE).
The cost of the application protocol depends on the type of protocol you choose. If you wish to choose wireless protocol, then you may need to pay anywhere between $50 and $150 depending on the product's quality.
Benefits
Application protocols offer many benefits. These protocols provide enhanced security features and ensure that all connections are properly positioned. Application protocols also check for device authentication. Application protocols maintain the privacy of both the sender and the receiver. Protocols also have error recovery methods that help maintain data integrity. They also ensure that the syntax rules are maintained in the correct manner and check whether all required hardware elements are present for network connectivity.
How It Works
Application protocols interact with the operating system or applications whenever the user chooses to transfer files, read messages, or perform other network related activities. Application layers define the network of virtual terminals that allow host terminals on a multiuser network to interact with each other, regardless of terminal type and characteristics. Application layers also solve problems that arise when the same program is running in different terminals.
Application layers employ an interactive request/response protocol. They read commands from the standard input and convert them into server requests that are sent to the server. The client request is processed by the server and the appropriate response is sent back to the system.
